  • Environmental Standards in Production Operations

  • In 2008, Toyota sold 158,000 Prius models in the US alone. This is obviously a formidable number and means that even though Toyota continues to produce other non-environmentally responsible cars, it has the majority share in the hybrid car market today. However, I believe that one other aspect of Toyota that many overlook is not simply its production of hybrid or non hybrid cars, but also its efforts to create environmentally responsible factories and operations across the world. In its publication, "Green Supplier Guidelines: Leadership in Environmental Performance", Toyota stated that its suppliers (those independent contractors who supply the car giant with random parts) were required to abide by specific environmental standards set forth by Toyota itself. One of the standards in this decree was for the suppliers to obtain the International Standardization Organization 14001 certification, which is a universal certification of environmental management standards. Toyota has also banned over 450 chemicals from use in all its suppliers' factories, and has created more stringent measures for transporting hazardous equipment. These are relevant and important facts to note, especially when thinking about how Toyota still produces cars that are not as clean as the Prius. The fact is, Toyota will continue to produce its other cars as long as the margins stay profitable. At least, however, the parts that are used to produce those cars will be from factories that follow stringent environmental regulations.
