- To promote the social responsibility of particular organizations
- To find businesses and organizations that you can feel comfortable supporting
- To avoid supporting or using organizations that are not socially responsible
- To make sure businesses care about the same social issues you care about
- To raise awareness about issues that matter to you and the businesses that support those causes
It is easy to get started. Just register and begin discussing and rating businesses, organizations or even politicians that have a positive or negative impact on our world. Vote (Yell) for discussions that you think people really need to read. Now we have a way to debate, find and promote socially responsible businesses.
What are the Social Categories?
There are five Social Categories: Environment, Health, Social Equity, Consumer Advocacy and Charity. These represent some of the areas in which corporations, organizations and people can be socially responsible. The reason for having multiple Social Categories is so you can find, discuss or rate businesses in the areas that matter most to you. And, it also lets you acknowledge an organization's efforts in one area while pointing out deficiencies in others. The Social Categories can be thought of like this:
- Environment
-- Low carbon
-- Low waste production
-- Recycling
-- Sustainable practices
- Health
-- Organic
-- Natural
-- Chemical free
-- Promoting global health
- Social Equity
-- Fair labor practices
-- Minority opportunities
-- No human exploitation
- Consumer Advocacy
-- Respects privacy
-- Promotes safety
- Charity
-- Donating to social causes
-- Active in communities
What if my cause or concern is not about an organization, business or person?
If you have information, questions or topics that you would like to discuss and they are not really about a particular organization you can post and discuss in the User Forum.
What is greenwashing and what does it have to do with SocialYell?
Greenwashing is a tactic used by companies or even politicians to advertise in a way that makes them seem green. The danger is that consumers do not actively uncover the true environmental impact of the organization. SocialYell allows for that discussion. The great part is it can uncover not only greenwashing but can also discover companies that may be environmentally sound, but not socially responsible - for example, a company that recycles, but does not pay fair wages in some countries.
