  • yet another company is dragging its feet

  • The only roadblock to massive adoption of EV's for Zipcar is that most areas don't have a large enough network of charging stations. But for the cities that do, there is absolutely no reason not to roll out the EV's. Here's the website you're referring to that cites Griffith: http://earth2tech.com/2009/07/13/zipcar-ceo-why-were-not-going-electric-anytime-soon/. "The average trip in a Zipcar is less than 25 miles and lasts about four hours, making as much as 95 percent of all Zipcar trips short enough for first-generation electric vehicles with limited range." He says the mainstream (and Zipcar) adoption of EV's is "many years" away, but second-generation EV's will have much larger charging networks and enough range for nearly every Zipcar user, so why wouldn't the offering of EV's be larger? That just doesn't make sense - I see no reason most regions couldn't have even 50% of their fleets be EV's, since 95% of the trips would be covered by the range of an EV even today. Since car sharing is a low-cost alternative to owning and driving your own vehicle, this would be a fantastic way to encourage the adoption and experimental use of EV's. Now, a bigger roadblock to adoption than the network seems to be Zipcar's disinclination to front the bill for new, expensive EV's.
